Multiple content areas can be taught along with technology in many fun ways! For example, in the book, Spaghetti and Meatballs for All! A Mathematical Story, by Marilyn Burns, children can learn more about perimeter and area through exploring restaurant seating arrangements.
Spreadsheet software may be used to illustrate these concepts using square cells which the students fill with color of their choice. Then, they can count the sides to determine the perimeter and the squares to find the area.
Thus, this technology activity illustrates these mathematical concepts in an interactive way. At the same time, children are increasing their literacy skills with a reading activity being included with their math learning.
See the link below for numerous ideas of simultaneously developing children’s literacy and math growth and consider how these may also incorporate technology learning. I have used this concept in presenting at K-12 math conferences and workshops.
